When I returned from my year living abroad in Belgium, I started my studies at Columbus State Community College. At CSCC, I followed a general course structure to obtain an Associate of Arts. I wasn't planning on staying at CSCC long enough to obtain the AA degree and after I completed 45 credit hours I applied to transfer to The Ohio State University!
My lack of motivation that I had when I was attending CSCC definitely did not transfer over to OSU. I was in love with OSU as soon as I attended the orientation. At this point I wasn't sure what I was going to major in. I was planning on majoring in French and Spanish, figuring that I'd quickly rush through French and have time to learn Spanish as I could put most my focus on it as I'd skip through the French with ease. I soon become a triple major in French, Spanish, and Linguistics after having looked at the website, ratemyprofessor. After a visit to said website, I decided to take an intro linguistics course instead of the philosophy course that I was taking. The reviews for the teacher for the philosophy course scared me enough to make the change. I enjoyed my Linguistics 201 (Intro to Linguistics) TA so much and I enjoyed linguistics that I decided to major in it. I soon dropped my Spanish major as I dropped a mandatory Spanish class that was taking up too much of my time. I ended up graduating with dual B.A. degrees, one in French, the other in Linguistics.
Since I had commuted to school when I attended CSCC I decided that I wanted to live the college experience at least for one year in a college dorm. I applied to live in the International House Living Learning Community and lived in Morrison Tower. I lived on the fourth floor for the autumn and part of winter quarters of 2005/2006. I worked at the Kennedy Commons Cafeteria during the first quarter and also got hired on to be a transcriber for the Variation in Speech: Buckeye Corpus project. I also applied to be an RA for the following 2006-2007 school year and ended up getting hired in early in February of 2006, thus leaving Morrison Tower to become the RA of the 5th floor of Taylor Tower Honors Living and Learning Community. I ended up working for University Housing and Student Affairs for the remainder of my time (three years) at OSU. I was pretty active in the Underlings (The Undergraduate Linguistics Club) as their Vice-President for two years and also with many other activities and organizations around campus. Using the links above, you can read in more detail about the areas of my life during my university years.
I met my best friend at Ohio State, Joan Berning. We were both taking a remedial math course as we were both cursed with the lack of math skills! Overall, getting to experience what is The Ohio State University has changed me for the better and has definitely been the best 4 years of my life thus far!
